Understanding the Research Process
I have completed several research methods and laboratory courses. My evidence is below including research proposals, research methods and advanced lab courses, and completion of funded research programs.
Research Proposals
UREAP Application for Optimized hunger games search algorithm for diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease supervised by Dr. Mohammad Tawhid. Funding awarded for Summer 2023.
Research proposal for analyzing solar cells with the scanning electron microscope PHYS 4480: Directed Studies in Physics: A Study on SEM, supervised by Dr. Anusha Venkataraman and Dr. Nancy Van Wagoner.
Research Methods Courses Taken
I have completed several research methods courses as part of my degree, these courses taught me the basic process of how to do research. The main courses are listed below:
- STAT 2230, Probability and Statistics for Engineers; a basic introduction to scientific statistics.
- PHYS 3080 Optics, an upper course with a lab. The lab component taught experiment design and research methodology for physics experiments. As a final project for this lab I designed experiments to replicate well-known physical effects in the lab. These were index matching of pyrex in mineral oil, and the Michelson interferometer.
- PHYS 3090 Analog Electronics, upper level electronics lab course teaching experiment design, and research methodology for physics experiments. The final project was to design a PID (Proportional Integral Differential) control system for an inverted pendulum.
- CENG 3010 Digital Systems Design, upper level engineering course teaching VHDL (Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language), hardware programming, FPGA’s (Field Programmable Gate Array’s), and engineering design. The final project was design and implementation of a remote car starter system.
Research Programs Completed
I have completed the following research programs:
- TRU Research Apprenticeship for project Optimized a swarm intelligent algorithm for diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease supervised by Dr. Mohammad Tawhid.
- TRU UREAP for project Optimized hunger games search algorithm for diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease supervised by Dr. Mohammad Tawhid.
- NSERC USRA for project A hybrid metaheuristic algorithm for solving thermodynamic problems supervised by Dr. Mohammad Tawhid.
- PHYS 4480 Directed Studies in Physics: A Study on SEM, supervised by Dr. Anusha Venkataraman and Dr. Nancy Van Wagoner.
- PHYS 4480 Directed Studies in Physics: Statistical Mechanics, supervised by Dr. Robin Kleiv.
